I’m currently preparing for an upcoming podcast interview, and the host posed a question that really got me thinking: What does self-care mean to you?
After the release of our best-selling book, my productivity started to decline. It hit me – I had become so immersed in the book’s process and aftermath that my own needs took a backseat.
And again, I’ve come to realize that self-care isn’t just a “nice to have,” something you do when ‘you have the time’, but rather a critical key to success.
I know this is something we say/hear/read about a lot nowadays, but clearly still not enough: we are not machines that can constantly operate without ever needing a break. We need downtime to refresh and recharge, to keep ourselves physically, emotionally, and mentally healthy.
For me self-care is:
⭐ Scheduled recovery time – after an intense workout or a challenging project.
⭐ Mindfulness time – meditation, breathing exercises, or a tranquil yoga flow
⭐ Nourishing food – eat seasonal, wholesome food. Junk ‘food’ is not food.
⭐ Hydration – water is essential! If you’re a coffee drinker, up your water intake.
⭐ Regular exercise – incorporate a mix of strength, mobility, and cardio. Balance is key.
⭐ Quality sleep – your ultimate superpower.
⭐ Spending time in nature – reconnect and recharge. We forget that we are part of nature.
⭐ Setting boundaries – give yourself permission to say ‘no’ when needed and say ‘yes’ more to your own needs.
⭐ Activities you enjoy – play more!
⭐ Spending time with people who lift you up, energise you, and fill your life with love. 💖
So, as I prepare for this interview, I’m taking this moment to remind myself and all of you, the importance of self-care. We all need to remember that the journey to success shouldn’t come at the expense of our health or happiness. In fact, the better we take care of ourselves, the better we can face life’s challenges, contribute to our surroundings, and enjoy the journey.
Right, I am off for a stroll in beautiful Haarlem. What will you do for yourself today?
